When selecting a mouthpiece, there are a number of factors to consider.
1) Tip Opening. The tip opening is the distance between the tip of the reed and the tip of the mouthpiece, measured in thousands of an inch. Generally speaking, the wider the tip opening, the softer the reed that may be used. For most beginners a narrower tip opening will result in a clearer tone and more consistent intonation.
2) Tone Chamber. The degree of edge or brightness the player obtains is dictated by the size of the tone chamber. Referring to the diagram above, the more 'baffle' that is built into the tone chamber, the more edge the tone will have. A '0' tone chamber will have the most edge and a '3' will have a more mellow tone.

JodyJazz HR* for Tenor
The Tenor sax model is aimed directly at the Otto Link Tenor sax mouthpiece. The sound is very similar to an Otto Link but with a little more projection and brightness and a more free blowing less resistant feel. The Chamber is round and smooth like the Link.

The FLZ Tenor piece is a large chamber piece in the style of the great Florida made pieces in the 1950's and 60's. The moderately large chamber and medium baffle give this piece great volume and projection while retaining a big deep solid sound. The sound of this piece is closest to a later Slant sig, but a bit wider and with more volume when pushed. The articulation and response is easy and fast as with all of my pieces. I gave the new mouthpiece setup a good play last night (Vandoren Jumbo Java T55 and Optimum ligature). What a difference. It feels like a whole new instrument. I was expecting it to be powerful, with that baffle it had to be, but what I wasn't expecting so much was the increased ability to play quietly and lyrically as well..... I thought it might be a bit of a monster, but it is just SO much better at everything. I seem to have much more stable breath control with it, and can keep long notes much more even.
